There are many reasons why people decide to pre-plan their own memorial.
One of the biggest reasons is to take the burden off of the family. Whether you have been given
a terminal diagnosis, or you are in good health, pre-planning is one of the greatest gifts you can
offer your family and loved ones.
Pre-planning allows you to provide information and guidance to your family about how you want to
be remembered and how you want others to celebrate your life. For example, if you were an avid
birder, you may want to consider a memorial celebration/fund raiser in conjunction with the Audubon
Society. Each memorial is as unique as you are.
Pre-planning your own, or helping a loved one pre-plan their memorial offers a sense of control –
and allows you the time to thoughtfully consider the details of your memorial.
Knowing you have stated your desires and have taken care of other legal/financial matters can
allow you the freedom to live fully in the present!
The pre-planning workbook is a tool that you complete and give copies to your spouse or partner,
family or loved ones. You may also wish to give a copy to your attorney, CPA or Financial Planner.
The workbook has basic information about you, your family, contact information and specifics as
to what kind of service or memorial you would like, and where you might like it to take place.
The workbook allows for every detail of a memorial (or funeral, if that is your preference) from
where you would like to be buried, cremated, interred to who you would like to speak, what kind of
music you want played, any poems or readings. It also
allows you to plan a reception following the service or provide for a ritual fitting for the
occasion. (a dove release, tree planting, etc.).
Pre-planning your own or a loved one’s memorial can be a difficult, and often emotional, task.
Having someone help you through the process and there to answer questions can be of great
comfort.
